In order to improve the involvement of the local community in EMY, the EMY staff organized the successful Kick-off, followed by the a taste of Neerpelt event. In the course of the Kick-off some 220 local schoolchildren sang the "Festivalsong", thus warmly welcoming EMY participants and spectators.
The song was inspired by the "Song for the Climate" for which Carine Van Gerven (teacher and conductor of the children's and youth choir Kiliana) and Johan Thaens (composer, pianist and piano-teacher), both from Overpelt, had worked together earlier. They composed the "Festivalsong" and Claudia Nieuwenhuizen from Achel wrote the lyrics. The three of them went to Mark Thijs's studio where they recorded the song.
A demo was then handed to primary schools in Neerpelt for teachers of the second and third formers to study the song. In the final weeks before the festival the Kiliana-choir came to help them out and rehearse the song in merely one dress-rehearsal just before the Kick-off. Nevertheless the schoolchildren's choir did very well during the Kick-off, and was warmly applauded after performing. Not long after the festival the children had the song recorded in its final version.
