Mr. Vic Nees, son of carillon-player Staf Nees and figurehead of contemporary choral music, turned 75 on March 8. He has been involved in EMY for years and has clearly put his stamp on the festival. No fewer than 21 of his compulsory songs have been around the world. He was a renowned member of the jury in 15 festival-editions.
In 2002 he passed the torch on to younger Flemish musicians but backstage he is still actively involved in the festival.
On March 13 he was offered a tribute-concert with 4 choirs singing his compositions: children's choir Clari Cantuli from Kessel-Lo with Ria Vanwing conducting got the evening started, followed by Kiliana-Overpelt with an ad hoc choir. The mixed choir Amabile, conducted by Jan Vanderheyden lined up with brass quintet AmBrass to sing and play on the home front. And the girls'choir Lirica from Genk with Jos Venken conducting performed in a speckless concert.
Mister Vic Nees, kindly keep on creating your beautiful music "ad multos annos".
