Categories instrumental

During the next instrumental festivals (2017, 2019, 2021, ...), you can participate in the following categories: 

All ensembles bring along all other instruments and the musicians' desks. More info about the use of  instruments*.

(Pennant) Category A: Symphonic bands, fanfares, brass bands

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category A, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category A, the programme must have a duration of minimum 22 and maximum 25 minutes.
  • Concertos or similar works with soloists are not allowed.

Criteria for the programme

  • 1 contemporary national piece (dated after 1970) composed by a composer from your own country of origin. A resume of the composer must be submitted as proof.
  • 1 international piece composed by a - for your ensemble - foreign composer
  • 1 original piece, composed for the strength of the ensemble (not arranged)
  • the widest possible stylistic diversity

Conditions for participation in the pennant category

At least one of the following conditions has to be met:

  • The ensemble obtained a level comparable to WMC division II;
  • The ensemble gained minimum a 1st prize cum laude during a previous festival edition;
  • The ensemble gained a remarkable artistic result during other international festivals and/or competitions;
  • The ensemble can show a thorough artistic experience;
  • Sending in a recent DVD recording is obligated (max. 1 to 2 years old). This recording needs to consist of at least one complete work and have a duration of at least 5 minutes, repertoire free of choice ( may be different from the jury concert). 
  • Orchestras related to a conservatory and/or an acadamy of arts/music are automatically obliged to participate in the pennant category. 

(Pennant) Category B: Jazz ensembles and big bands

(o.a. Small groups, Big bands, Dixieland Jazz Bands, New Orleans Jazz Bands, ...)

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category B, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category B, the programme must last minimum 22 to maximum 25 minutes. 
  • Improvisation is an important parameter and will certainly be appreciated.
  • own compositions are possible and are even given preference. 

Criteria for the programme

  • a varied programme, preferably acoustic
  • 1 'standard' dated between 1930 and 1960 (not for big bands)
  • a periodic diversity with minimum 1 piece dated after 1980
  • a stylistic diversity (blues, ballad, medium, up-tempo). Own compositions are preferred but not obligated

Conditions for particpation in the pennant category

At least one of the following conditions has to be met: 

  • the ensemble gained a 1st prize cum laude at a previous EMJ edition;
  • the ensemble gained a remarkable artistic result on other international festivals and/of competitions;
  • the ensemble can show a thorough artistic experience;
  • Sending in a recent DVD recording is obligated (max. 1 to 2 years old). This recording ha sto have a duration of at least 5 minutes and consist of at least 1 complete work, free of choice (may be different from the jury concert).
  • Ensembles related to a conservatory and/or an acadamy of arts/music are automatically obliged to participate in the pennant category.  

(Pennant) Category C: Percussion ensembles

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category C, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category C, the programme must have a duration of minimum 22 and maximum 25 minutes.
  • Concertos or similar works with soloists are not allowed.

Criteria for the programme

  • 1 national piece composed by a composer from your own country of origin. A resume of the composer must be submitted as proof.
  • 1 international piece composed by a - for your ensemble - foreign composer
  • 1 original piece, composed for the strength of the ensemble (not arranged)
  • a periodic diversity with at least one piece dated after 1970

(Pennant) Category D: Ensembles for chamber music

The occupation of the ensemble has to be conform the requirements of
a. Instrumental chamber music, from duo to dixtuor (based on equality, no relationship soloist - accompaniment)
b. Mixed vocal-instrumental ensemble with a maximum of 4 singers (based on equality, no relationship soloist - accompaniment)

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category D, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category D, the programme must have a duration of minimum 22 and maximum 25 minutes.
  • Concertos or similar works with soloists are not allowed.

Criteria for the programme

  • 1 national piece composed by a composer from your own country of origin. A resume of the composer must be submitted as proof.
  • 1 international piece, sung in the original language and composed by a - for your ensemble - foreign composer
  • maximum 1 arranged piece, composed for the strength of the ensemble
  • a stylistic diversity
  • a periodic diversity with at least one piece dated after 1970

Conditions for participation in the pennant category

At least one of the following conditions has to be met:

  • the ensemble gained minimum a 1st prize cum laude during a previous festival edition;
  • the ensemble gained a remarkable artistic result during other international festivals and/or competitions;
  • the ensemble can show a thorough artistic experience;
  • Sending in a recent DVD recording is obligated (max. 1 to 2 years old). This recording needs to consist of at least one complete work and have a duration of at least 5 minutes, repertoire free of choice (may be different from the jury concert). 
  • Ensembles related to a conservatory and/or academy of arts/music are automatically obliged to participate in the pennant category. 

(Pennant) Category E: Chamber orchestras, string orchestras and symphony orchestras

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category E, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category E, the programme must have a duration of minimum 22 and maximum 25 minutes.
  • Concertos or similar works with soloists are not allowed.

Criteria for the programme

  • 1 international piece composed by a - for your ensemble - foreign composer
  • 1 piece, composed for the strength of the ensemble (arrangements are allowed)
  • a stylistic diversity
  • a periodic diversity with at least one piece dated after 1970
  • if possible, 1 national piece composed by a composer from your own country of origin. A resume of the composer must be submitted as proof.

Conditions for participation in the pennant category

At least one of the following conditions has to be met:

  • the ensemble gained minimum a 1st prize cum laude during a previous festival edition;
  • the ensemble gained a remarkable artistic result during other international festivals and/or competitions;
  • the ensemble can show a thorough artistic experience;
  • Sending in a recent DVD recording is obligated (max. 1 tot 2 years old). This recording needs to consist of at least one complete work and have a duration of at least 5 minutes, repertoire free of choice (may be different from the jury concert). 
  • Ensembles related to a conservatory and/or an acadamy of arts/music are automatically obliged to participate in the pennant category.  

(Pennant) Category F: Ensembles for free instrumentation, folk music and other instruments

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category F, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category F, the programme must have a duration of minimum 22 and maximum 25 minutes.
  • Concertos or similar works with soloists are not allowed.

Criteria for the programme

  • a stylistic diversity (not compulsory for ensembles for folk music) 
  • 1 international piece composed by a - for your ensemble - foreign composer
  • 1 national piece, composed by a composer from your own country of origin, is advisable. A resume of the composer must be submitted as proof. (not compulsory for ensembles for folk music)
  • a periodic diversity

Conditions for participation in the pennant category

At least one of the following conditions has to be met:

  • the ensemble gained minimum a 1st prize cum laude during a previous festival edition;
  • the ensemble gained a remarkable artistic result during other international festivals and/or competitions;
  • the ensemble can show a thorough artistic experience;
  • Sending in a recent DVD recording is obligated (max. 1 to 2 years old). This recording needs to consist of at least one complete work and have a duration of at least 5 minutes, repertoire free of choice (may be different from the jury concert).
  • Ensembles related to a conservatory and/or academy of arts/music are automatically obliged to participate in the pennant category. 

(Pennant) Category G: Ensembles for ancient music

((i.e. music composed before 1750)

Conditions

At least following programme conditions have to be considered:

  • In category G, the programme must have a duration of minimum 18 and maximum 20 minutes.
  • In pennant category G, the programme must have a duration of minimum 22 and maximum 25 minutes.
  • Concertos or similar works with soloists are not allowed.

Criteria for the programme

  • 1 international piece composed by a - for your ensemble - foreign composer
  • only original pieces, composed for the strength of the ensemble (no arrangements)
  • stylistic diversity

At least one of the following conditions has to be met:

  • the ensemble gained minimum a 1st prize cum laude during a previous festival edition;
  • the ensemble gained a remarkable artistic result during other international festivals and/or competitions;
  • the ensemble can show a thorough artistic experience;
