Composer : Martin Slootmaekers

Martin Slootmaekers is the next one to be dealt with in our series of composers. He is the composer of the compulsory song in the D-series. He studied at the municipal musicacademy of Lanaken for piano. He proceeded on studying at the Lemmens-Institute in Louvain where he obtained the laureate-certificate for composition and music-education under Piet Swerts and was awarded first prizes for solfeggio, harmony, practical harmony, counterpoint and fugue.

Under the direction of Erik Van Nevel he obtained a First Prize Choral conducting and the Master Diploma Choral Directing. In 1995 his composition "Splinters" (for clarinet and piano) was the compulsory work in the finals for clarinet, saxophone and bassoon in the National Contest for Music and Words of the Gemeentekrediet (now Axion-Classics of Dexia-bank).
In 1997 "(IM)MOBILE" (for hobo and piano) was selected for the same contest to be the compulsory work for hobo and basson.
In 1998 his composition "Nunc Dimittis" for mixed choir and organ was awarded the Fourth Prize in the Alphons Diepenbrock Composition Contest in the Netherlands. In the past few years he was commissioned to compose among others fore Capella di Voce (Kurt Bikkembergs), Capella Beatae Mariae ad Lacum (Tienen) and the Koorfederatie Vlaanderen.

His cantates for children's and youth-choirs "Web international" (lyrics by Jan Coeck) and "Knuffeltijd" (lyrics by Jan Wouters) have regularly been successfully performed by various ensembles.

His compositions cover a wide field of creations for solo-instruments (piano, organ and viola), ensembles (string-trio, recorder-quartet, massive brass-ensembles), choirs (mixed choirs, single-voice choirs and children's choirs) and symphony and harmony orchestras.

In Ghent he was invited to direct a rehearsal-day concerning contemporary choral music, and in Tienen the Capella Beatae Mariae ad Lacum (CBM) wanted him to lead a project on "humorous" choral music for single-voice choirs.

From March to November 2002 he was involved in a project on English poetry with the Capella Academica (the personnel choir of the Catholic University of Louvain). Moreover he is a teacher at numerous music academies (AMV, AMT, MT, Koor, Vocal Ensemble).

The D-series compulsory song is a composition to the anonymous lyrics of "Now is the month of Maying".
