Since 1962 the compulsory songs have been a permanent part of the repertory to be performed by the participants in the jury-performances. Moreover they are a good measure to evaluate each choir. Most of the compulsory songs are written by Flemish composers.
Rehearsing and performing the compulsory songs – a challenge to each choir – offers the participating choirs an opportunity to get to know Flemish choral music. As a result the work of Flemish composers has been spread within Europe and far beyond for over 50 years.
Jan Coeck teaches at the Lemmensinstitute in Louvain and works as a composer, piano-accompanist and arranger. He wrote "Dujanki Dujan" for the A-series.
Paul Steegmans is a composer of works for piano and organ, for guitar, for choirs and for chamber-music with a worldwide reputation. He composed "Luna Llena" for the B-series.
Erica Budai teaches harmony and music-composition at the municipal conservatory of Louvain. She has created some 140 compositions of her own, and is often invited to be a member of the jury at national and international festivals. She wrote "My Flower" for the C-series.
Roland Coryn is a member of, among others, the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and he works as a composer and honorary teacher at the Ghent Highschool, and he is the honorary President of SAMW Peter Benoit in Harelbeke. He wrote "La Ménagerie Minuscule –La Tortue" for the D-series.
Peter Pieters teaches organ, improvisation and keyboard-practice at the Lemmensinstitute in Louvain and he is the chief organist of the St.-Romboutscathedral in Mechelen. As a composer he mainly writes vocal music, chamber-music and pieces for choir and orchestra. He wrote "The Fly" for the E-series.
Raymond Schroyens was a choirmaster in Detroit, and a music teacher in Mechelen and in Berchem and a clavecinist with the Concertino J.B. Loeillet in Mechelen. For over 30 years he worked with BRT-Radio 3 as an administrator/cultural activist and he was often awarded national and international prizes. He wrote "Mignonne" for the F-series.
It is our intention to dedicate one page to each song so as to give the participating choirs an idea of what to work on when practising the compulsory songs.
The final publication will be sent to every subscriber by the end of December.
