At the beginning of May Neerpelt will again bubble with youthful musical talent. Youngsters from all over Europe and beyond will gather here to sing and make music together in an atmosphere of fraternization. The European Music Festival wishes to be the epicentre for youngsters from different cultures, where they can meet and appreciate each other through music. Neerpelt is already preparing for Europe’s largest feast of music. For this 59th Festival instrumental and mixed ensembles are welcome from Friday April 29th until Monday May 2nd 2011. The Festival is the meeting place for thousands of youngsters making music together and fraternizing in an enthusiastic mood. A renowned international jury evaluates the performances of the participants from a constructive angle. The combination of social commitment and competition makes the European Music Festival for Young People a unique event in Flanders and Europe! We hope to meet you and your ensemble in Neerpelt during these musical top days.

Regulations

emj2007_03984 You compose the repertoire for your jury performance yourself according the rules mentioned in your category. You determine the order of the works on your application form. Changes in the programme are only allowed after explicit and written agreement of the organizing committee and only before 1 March 2011. After that date the presented programme must be performed in the order as given on the application form (no exceptions!). The maximum age of the participants is set at the age of 25 year
Every ensemble will receive a diploma during the proclamation. After the proclamation conductors will have an opportunity to talk to the members of the jury. A jury report will be handed a few weeks after the festival. To complete the registration following documents have to be completed and entered. This can be done on-line using the registration modules. During the jury performance in April and May 2011 you need to have three copies of the scores, which you hand over to the jury just before your jury performance. In Belgium the use of photocopies is forbidden by law. Violation of the law is at your own risk. We advise you to use original scores. On Saturday April 30th and Sunday May 1st 2011, evening concerts will be organized with the laureates of the day in the theatre of the Provincial Domain Dommelhof. The commitment of selected ensembles is obliged unconditional.

Not complying these regulations can result in a disqualification.


Formulas

Formula 1: from 29/04 untill 02/05/11

 Friday 29/04/2011:

  • arrival between 12:00 and 19:00
  • evening meal
  • free entrance to the opening spectacle and the firework

Saturday 30/04/2011:

  • breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • participation in the jury concert
  • free entrance to all other jury concerts
  • free participation in a workshop and/or other concert
  • free participation in the evening happening; as participant or as visitor

Sunday 01/05/2011:

  • breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • participation in the jury concert
  • free entrance to all other jury concerts
  • free participation in a workshop and/or other concert
  • free participation in the farewell party, incl. 1 free consumption

Monday 02/05/2011:

  • breakfast
  • departure before 10:00

Formula 2: on saturady 30/04/2011 or sunday 01/05/2011 (day formula)

  • arrival between 08 and 12 h.
  • participation in the jury concert
  • free entrance to all other jury concerts
  • free participation in the evening happening on 30/04/2011; as participant or as visitor
  • free participation in the farewell party on 01/05/2011, incl. 1 free consumption
  • meal as desired, after temporary reservation

Because of organizational reasons, the organizing festival determines the day of your jury performance.


Jury concerts

Changes in the jury programme are only possible with an explicit permission by the organizing committee before March 1st 2011. After that day the programme has to be performed in the rank order mentioned on the registration form.

A renowned international jury evaluates from a constructive angle all participants' performances and will hand during the proclamation a diploma. After the proclamation the jury can be consulted in person. A few weeks after the festival a jury report will be sent emphasising a positive and noncompetitive assessment. The diploma states:

  • first prize “summa cum laude": 98, 99 and 100%
  • first prize “cum laude": over 90%
  • first prize: over 80%
  • second prize: over 70%
  • third prize: over 60%
  • mention: 59% or less
Groups with 90% or more will also receive the festival medal.

No cash prizes or prizes in kind will be awarded. No allowances will be paid for possible sound and/or video recordings of the performance. (All rights reserved)


Travel info

Participants requiring a visa to come to Belgium should apply for it at the Belgian embassy in their country three months before the festival (which is at the end of January 2011). If you are travelling by train or by plane, you must book the return journey at the same time. You should confirm your return journey on arrival in Neerpelt.Not all locations are at walking distance. Groups that have no bus at their disposal can order a bus service at the Festival before 15th March 2011. You will have to pay a fixed price.

We advise the groups to take a travel or cancellation insurance.

We expect to receive the following information on 25th October 2010 at the very latest:
  • application and accommodation form (*)
  • list of participants with their names, date of birth and instrument (*)
  • (original) scores of all the pieces
  • recent (digital) photo of the ensemble
  • recent sound recording
  • recent DVD recording (for the pennant categories)

(*) you can download these documents from the website or apply for them at the secretariat of the festival.

The organizing committee decides on the selection of a group. Only completely valid applications that arrive in time are eligible.

All groups will be notified about their selection and assigned category in December 2010.


Participation costs

All selected groups will pay a participation fee of € 7,5 per participant with a maximum of € 250 and a minimum of € 75 per ensemble. Music organisations, wishing to participate with several different ensembles, following maximum participation costs will be charged:
- the first ensemble: maximum 250 EURO - minimum 75 EURO
- the second ensemble: maximum 150 EURO - minimum 75 EURO
- the third and all next ensembles: maximum 125 EURO - minimum 75 EURO
People participatin in several ensembles will pay the participation fee only  once.

You will receive a detailed invoice for the participation and accommodation costs. The participation fee along with an advance of at least 80% of the total accommodation costs must be transferred to account number 335-0037809-25 of ING, Leopoldlaan 146 in 3900 Overpelt before 15th February 2011 at the very latest. State the code “EMJ 2011 – number of the group, name, place of origin of the group” on the transfer form. IBAN n°: BE70 3350 0378 0925 – BIC-code: BBRUBEBB (for international transfers).

  • In case of late payment of the registration fee and/or the advance, the application will be annulled!
  • If a selected group withdraws from the festival after 01/03/2011, the registration fee will be considered compensation for administrative costs; this amount will be increased with reservation costs for lodging and meals.
  • The balance will be settled before arrival by a final bill, having taken into account the paid advances. All participants are obliged to settle all remaining balances before or at arrival.
  • The festival accepts no credit cards and no reimbursements of travelling expenses will be paid.


Data to remember


  • Before 25/10/2010: send in the application forms along with all necessary information

  • Before 31/01/2011: apply for visa

  • Before 15/02/2011: transfer the registration fee and at least 80% of the accommodation costs

  • Before 01/03/2011: ask permission for possible changes in your repertoire

  • Before 01/03/2011: ask specific accommodation facilities for bus drivers

  • Before 15/03/2011: book a bus if necessary and report possible changes in the number of participants
  • Before 15/03/2011: make reservations for meals and/or workshops for one day participants
